About

The young Finnish bass Tapani Plathan (b. 1984) is currently an ensemble member at Saarländisches Staatstheater Saarbrücken in Germany. During his first season there he can be heard in roles like Leporello in Don Giovanni, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte and Sparafucile in Rigoletto.

Plathan began his classical studies with Oboe and Piano but was drawn into classical singing at the age of 23, when he was admitted to Sibelius Academy. He made his debut at the Finnish National Opera in August 2012 as Strojnik in the Makropulos Affair and later also performed Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore and Masetto in Don Giovanni there. In Finland Plathan has also been seen as Leporello in Don Giovanni (Helsinki Festival), Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte (Kokkola Opera) and Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Helsinki Music Centre).

In 2014 Plathan moved to Germany to pursue his career further. Before joining the theatre in Saarbrücken, he was an ensemble member in Landestheater Coburg for the season 2014/2015, where he performed roles such as Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Colline in La Bohème.

In addition to his operatic repertoire, Plathan has frequently been performing also on the concert platform in works as e.g. Mozart: Requiem, Verdi: Requiem, Dvorak: Stabat Mater and Buxtehude: Membra Jesu Nostri.

Plathan has worked with many important conductors, including Sakari Oramo, Leif Segerstam, Stefan Soltesz, Mikko Franck, Ville Matvejeff, Antonino Fogliani, Jaakko Kuusisto and Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
