About

The Signum Quartet has set a mark in the international quartet scene with its rousingly lively interpretations and established itself as one of the most distinguished ensembles of its generation with its individual program conceptions.

Intensive studies with the Alban Berg Quartet, the Artemis Quartet and the Melos Quartet as well as the collaboration with György Kurtág, Walter Levin, Alfred Brendel, Leon Fleisher and Jörg Widmann characterize the artistic development of the Signum Quartet, which has won numerous awards (Deutscher Musikwettbewerb, Premio Paolo Borciani, London International String Quartet Competition) and has received a lot of support (eg BBC New Generation Artists, stART program / Bayer Kultur).

Concerts include the Signum Quartet at international podiums from Madrid and Barcelona to Basel and Paris, the Hamburg Laeiszhalle, the Pierre Boulez-Saal and the Philharmonie Berlin, the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Philharmonie Luxemburg, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus Wien, the Wigmore Hall London, the Boston Harvard Musical Association to the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Schwetzinger Festspiele and the BBC Proms.

The discography of the Signum Quartet proves its stylistic range: in addition to the greats of quartet literature, there are also rarities such as the quartets of Ludwig Thuille and a recording of quartet movements.

The CD "No. 3 "(Bartók, Berg and Schnittke) received the 2014 International Classical Music Awards for Best Recording in the Chamber Music category. After the following CDs "soundescapes" (Ravel, Debussy, Adès) and "Alla czeca" (Suk, Schulhoff, Dvorák) the CD "Aus dem Ferne" with works of Franz Schubert, which was praised by the international press and recently appeared was awarded the Diapason d'Or for September 2018.

The artistic work of the Signum Quartet is characterized in particular by the regular cooperation with contemporary composers. Bruno Mantovani dedicated his third string quartet to the ensemble. For 2019, first recordings of works by Erkki-Sven Tüürs and Kevin Volans will be released.

In 2015, the quartet launched the innovative social media project #quartweet, which invites composers worldwide - regardless of age and education - to send a short quartet of 140 characters or less via Twitter. The project caused a lot of media attention and was by Deutschlandfunk, presented at BBC In Tune and in the context of the program U-21 of the Bayerischer Rundfunk. Among the composers who have contributed works are Brett Dean, Sebastian Currier, Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, Bruno Mantovani and Kevin Volans.

The quartet's chamber music partners include Elisabeth Leonskaja, Jörg Widmann, Igor Levit, Nils Mönkemeyer, Adrian Brendel and Dominique Horwitz.
