Overview

Philippe Herreweghe was born in Ghent and combined his university studies there with musical training at the conservatory. At the same time he began conducting and founded the Collegium Vocale Gent in 1970.
Philippe Herreweghe's lively, authentic and rhetorical approach to baroque music was soon praised. In 1977 he founded the ensemble La Chapelle Royale in Paris, with which he performed music from the French Golden Age. He created various ensembles with which he was able to give an adequate and thorough reading of a repertoire from the Renaissance to contemporary music. The Ensemble Vocal Européen specialized in Renaissance polyphony and the Orchester des Champs-Élysées, founded in 1991, specialized in interpreting the Romantic and pre-Romantic repertoire on original instruments. Last season, Philippe Herreweghe presented Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in historical tones together with soloists Magdalena Kožená and Andrew Staples.
The highlights of the 2023/24 season include guest conducting with the Munich Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Philharmonia Orchestra London. Together with the Collegium Vocale Gent and the Orchester des Champs-Élysées, he is going on a European tour with, among other things, the Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Herreweghe will also present Bach's B minor with the choir and orchestra of the Collegium Vocale Gent

Fair at the leading festivals in Europe and performs with the St. Matthew Passion in Katowice, Hamburg and Munich, among others.
In September 2021, Philippe Herreweghe accepted a re-invitation to the Bremen Music Festival with concerts together with the Orchester des Champs-Élysées and Collegium Vocale Gent. After making his music festival debut in 1996 with the choir and orchestra of the Collegium Vocale Gent, he was honored in 2021 with the Bremen Music Festival Prize for his outstanding artistic work. In the same year, Herreweghe was awarded the “Ultima” cultural prize for general cultural achievements by the Flemish government.
Because of his consistent artistic vision and commitment, Philippe Herreweghe has been honored on various occasions. In 1990, the European music press voted him “Music Personality of the Year.” Together with the Collegium Vocale Gent, Philippe Herreweghe was named “Cultural Ambassador of Flanders”. A year later he was awarded the Order of Officier des Arts et Lettres and in 1997 he received an honoris causa doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven. In 2003 he received the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in France. In 2010, the city of Leipzig awarded Philippe Herreweghe the Bach Medal for his great achievements as a Bach interpreter. In 2017, Philippe Herreweghe received an honorary doctorate from Ghent University.

Venue Info

Semperoper Dresden - Dresden
Location   Theaterplatz 2

Not only one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, the Semperoper is renowned both in Germany and abroad for the brilliant star-studded performances by Saxon State Opera as well as numerous international guest artists.

This is the home of the Staatskapelle Dresden, an orchestra which looks back on 460 years of uninterrupted music-making. The State Opera Chorus was founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817. Operatic history has been written here, with the Semperoper playing host to numerous important premieres, such as Richard Wagner’s "Rienzi", "Der fliegende Holländer" and "Tannhäuser". There is also an indissoluble link to Richard Strauss, nine of whose 15 operas were premiered in Dresden, including "Salome", "Der Rosenkavalier" and "Elektra". The small venue Semper Zwei provides space for diverse forms of music theatre as well as theatrical experiments, and is also the venue for performances of Semperoper Junge Szene.

The magnificent Semperoper dominates the Theaterplatz be-side the river Elbe, forming the centrepiece of the historic old city. The original building opened its doors in 1841, constructed to a design by Gottfried Semper which combined a late Classical style with Renaissance elements. Following a devastating fire in 1869, the citizens of Dresden immediately set about rebuilding their beloved opera house. This was completed in 1878, also to a design by Semper. In 1945, during the final months of World War II, the Semperoper was once again razed to the ground.

After a second reconstruction was successfully completed in 1985, the reopening of one of Europe’s most beautiful opera houses was celebrated with a performance of Carl Maria von Weber’s "Freischütz".
The dazzling interiors were painstakingly reconstructed by local craftsmen and artists according to original plans, with state-of-the art stage machinery and technical fittings in the auditorium. A modern annex was added to house the administrative offices and rehearsal rooms. Internationally renowned for its brilliant acoustics and incomparable performances, audiences from around the world continue to flock here to enjoy unforgettable experiences at the Semperoper Dresden.
