Overview

Celebrated for his captivating, authentic and inclusive approach to conducting, Petr Popelka has been named the Vienna Symphony Orchestra's new chief conductor from the 2024/25 season. The Czech is also chief conductor and artistic director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and was previously chief conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra in Oslo. In the 2023/2024 season, Popelka will lead the Vienna Symphony Orchestra as designated chief conductor in a new production of Weinberger's "Schwanda der Bagpiper" at the MusikTheater an der Wien and will accompany the orchestra at several concerts in Vienna and on two European tours. He will also make his debut with Mozart's “Don Giovanni” at the Zurich Opera House and will work for the first time with the Gewandhausorchester, Munich Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Orchester national de France and Orchester National du Capitole de Toulouse. He also returns to the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Luxemburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Danish National, among others

Symphony Orchestra and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Previous debuts have taken him to the Czech Philharmonic, Saxon Staatskapelle Dresden, Bamberg Symphony, SWR Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, hr Symphony Orchestra, German Radio Philharmonic, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Orchestra sinfonica nazionale della RAI and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He also directed the ORF's traditional TV concerts “Spring in Vienna” and the ZDF Advent concert in Dresden. His new productions of Shostakovich's “Nose” at the Semperoper and Strauss' “Elektra” at the Oslo Opera were celebrated by the press and audience. Petr Popelka received his musical training in his hometown Prague and in Freiburg. From 2010 to 2019 he was deputy solo double bassist of the Saxon Staatskapelle Dresden. In addition to conducting, Petr Popelka also works as a composer.

Known for his musicality and rich sonority, his proven technique and the acclaimed beauty of his viola tone, Antoine Tamestit is considered one of the most important ambassadors of his instrument. Whether as a concert soloist, chamber musician or viola professor – Tamestit is in demand and appreciated worldwide. With his Stradivarius from 1672, on loan from the Habisreutinger Foundation, whose warm sound reminds him of “an Italian opera singer,” he is always looking for an original approach to music. He has been playing regularly in the Zimmermann Trio since 2007 with his fellow musicians Christian Poltéra and Frank Peter Zimmermann - the latter invited him to his special concert at the Semperoper in 2019 for Mozart's Sinfonia concertante KV 364, and his debut for Tamestit with the Staatskapelle.

Born in Paris in 1979, the son of a violin teacher and composer studied with Jean Sulem, Jesse Levine and Tabea Zimmermann. He received several prestigious awards, including first prize in the ARD music competition. Recordings of his wide repertoire are released on the Harmonia Mundi label. His enthusiasm for contemporary music is reflected in the large number of works he created.

Venue Info

Semperoper Dresden - Dresden
Location   Theaterplatz 2

Not only one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, the Semperoper is renowned both in Germany and abroad for the brilliant star-studded performances by Saxon State Opera as well as numerous international guest artists.

This is the home of the Staatskapelle Dresden, an orchestra which looks back on 460 years of uninterrupted music-making. The State Opera Chorus was founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817. Operatic history has been written here, with the Semperoper playing host to numerous important premieres, such as Richard Wagner’s "Rienzi", "Der fliegende Holländer" and "Tannhäuser". There is also an indissoluble link to Richard Strauss, nine of whose 15 operas were premiered in Dresden, including "Salome", "Der Rosenkavalier" and "Elektra". The small venue Semper Zwei provides space for diverse forms of music theatre as well as theatrical experiments, and is also the venue for performances of Semperoper Junge Szene.

The magnificent Semperoper dominates the Theaterplatz be-side the river Elbe, forming the centrepiece of the historic old city. The original building opened its doors in 1841, constructed to a design by Gottfried Semper which combined a late Classical style with Renaissance elements. Following a devastating fire in 1869, the citizens of Dresden immediately set about rebuilding their beloved opera house. This was completed in 1878, also to a design by Semper. In 1945, during the final months of World War II, the Semperoper was once again razed to the ground.

After a second reconstruction was successfully completed in 1985, the reopening of one of Europe’s most beautiful opera houses was celebrated with a performance of Carl Maria von Weber’s "Freischütz".
The dazzling interiors were painstakingly reconstructed by local craftsmen and artists according to original plans, with state-of-the art stage machinery and technical fittings in the auditorium. A modern annex was added to house the administrative offices and rehearsal rooms. Internationally renowned for its brilliant acoustics and incomparable performances, audiences from around the world continue to flock here to enjoy unforgettable experiences at the Semperoper Dresden.
