About

A new symphonic choir founded by the Laurenscantorij Foundation in collaboration with De Doelen and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rotterdam Symphony Chorus is made up of singers from the professional Laurens Collegium Rotterdam and the semi-professional Laurenscantorij. Its artistic director is Wiecher Mandemaker.

The Rotterdam Symphony Chorus was founded for the special purpose of giving quality performances of compositions requiring a large chorus. In November 2013, the chorus gave its very first performance, teaming up with Lucas and Arthur Jussen in Johannes Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem. It has performed Ralph Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of James Gaffigan, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra. Other highlights include the première of the choruses from John Adams’s Death of Klinghoffer in an arrangement by Bob Zimmerman, and Howells’s Hymnus Paradisi with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, both in 2015. In 2017 the Rotterdam Symphony Chrorus participated in a scenic production of Beethoven’s Fidelio with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and performed Brittens War Requiem, and in May 2018 joined the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Barbbins in Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius.
