One of Quebec’s leading cultural ambassadors, the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal was founded in 1981 on a daring gamble: that the best way to promote symphonic music is by creating strong ties with the public. Building on this special relationship, the ensemble has earned an enviable international reputation.

Since his appointment as artistic director and principal conductor in 2000, Yannick Nézet-Séguin has developed and maintained an exceptional relationship with the musicians, undoubtedly contributing to the Orchestre’s success, longevity and growing fame.

Guided by its constant pursuit of excellence, the Orchestre Métropolitain is committed to presenting symphonic music innovatively, creatively and uncompromisingly, through its concerts and recordings. Brought to life by its Quebec-trained musicians, its adventurous programming has made the Orchestre a standout player on the symphonic stage.

Each year, the Orchestre Métropolitain performs some 50 concerts that fill the Maison symphonique de Montréal with sound and, through its collaboration with the Conseil des arts de Montréal, resonate far beyond the Quartier des spectacles and into a dozen of the city’s boroughs. Sharing its passion for classical music with people from all walks of life, the Orchestre distinguishes itself through its vibrant Young Music Lovers program which multiplies educational initiatives.

Proud of working with musicians and singers from every background, the Orchestre was a key player in the 2017 festivities marking the 375th anniversary of the founding of Montreal. It also works closely with other companies, in particular the Opéra de Montréal.

The recipient of many national awards, the Orchestre Métropolitain owes its international reputation to, among other things, its some 20 recordings, many of them for the Canadian ATMA Classique label. Its complete Bruckner symphony cycle, the last recording in which will appear in the spring of 2018, displays the Orchestre’s boldness and excellence. In 2016, the ensemble was joined by signers Rolando Villazón and Ildar Abdrazakov to record its first disc for Deutsche Grammophon.

This past fall, the OM shone on the international stage alongside principal conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, during its first-ever European tour. The tour was awarded the Conseil des Arts de Montréal’s Grand Prix in March 2018. In November 2018, the OM was awarded the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec’s prize for Best International Tour.
