Kwangchul Youn (* 1966Cheongju, South Korea) is a Korean Opera singer (Bass).

In 1993/94 he sang at the Opera Leipzig, among others, the parts of the Sarastro (the Magic Flute) and the Komtur (Don Giovanni). In 1994 there was a pre-singing at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, which led to a contract as a member of the ensemble. He remained in this position until 2004 and is still a frequent guest there. Among other things, he interpreted the king in Aida, the Minister in Fidelio, King Marke (Tristan and Isolde), Bertram (Robert le diable), Colline (La Bohème) and Lodovico (Otello).

This was followed by Engagements at the Opéra Bastille in Paris (Simon Boccanegra) and at the Théâtre du Châtelet (Elektra, Fidelio) as well as at the opera of Barcelona (Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Tristan and Isolde).

In 1996, he made his Bayreuth debut as the night watchman in die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. There he sang in new productions: 2002 the Landgrafen in Tannhäuser, 2004 Titurel in Parsifal and 2005 König mark in Tristan and Isolde, 2006 Fasolt in Das Rheingold and Hunding in Die Walküre. In addition, in 2008 the role debut as Gurnemanz in Parsifal - a new production by Stefan Herheim.

Under the direction of Daniele Gatti, he sang the Gurnemanz in a concert performance at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. In 2011, Kwangchul Youn played in this role at the Teatro Regio di Torino, at the Paris Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, at the Bavarian State Opera Munich and at the Staatsoper Hamburg. On the 60th anniversary of Daniel Barenboim, he participated in performances of Verdi's Aida and Messa da Requiem at Teatro Colón Buenos Aires from 29 to 31 August 2010.

Since 2007, he has worked at the Frankfurt Opera House, where he sang the role of Philip II in Don Carlo. He is also in Bilbao, Teatro Real in Madrid, in Valencia, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Vienna state Opera (Mephisto in Faust), the Metropolitan Opera (king Marke in Tristan and Isolde, Ferrando in Il trovatore, Commendatore in Don Giovanni), the Washington National Opera and at London's Royal Opera House (king Heinrich in Lohengrin) active.

In addition to his opera work, Kwangchul Youn also performs as a concert singer at the academia Santa Cecilia in Rome as well as at the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus (e.g. in March 2010 in the 8th Symphony by Gustav Mahler) and at the Salzburg Easter Festival.  In the Berliner Philharmonie he had to experience in the Requien of Mozart and Verdi, in the Nelson Fair of Haydn and in Beethoven's Missa solemnis.

He gave recitals with his piano-partner Helmut Oertel, such as, for example, in the summer of 2007 in the margravial Opera house in Bayreuth, and in the autumn of 2007 in the Frankfurt Opera. In December 2009, a performance of the winter tour with Myung-Whun Chung on the piano was performed at the Art Center, Seoul. He regularly sings the bass part in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in the New Year's concerts at the Konzerthaus in Berlin.

He has worked with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Mark Minkowski, Fabio Luisi, Michael Gielen, Myung-Whun Chung, Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Horst Stein and Thomas Hengelbrock in opera and concert as well as with CD productions such as the Meistersinger recording of the Bayreuth Festival under Daniel Barenboim at Teldec or the Label harmonia mundi (La Didone, Croesus).

The recordings of the operas Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Tiefland and Don Giovanni were made under Bertrand de Billy and were released at Arte Nova. Opus Arte has released a DVD of the famous and controversial Don Giovanni Calixto Bieitos from the Gran Teatro del Liceu, Barcelona under Bertrand de Billy with kwangchul Youn as Leporello. The DVD of Rheingold with Kwangchul Youn as Fasolt (directed by Harry Kupfer) was also released in Barcelona by Opus Arte.

Gounod's Faust was also recorded at the Vienna State opera (Orfeo) in 2009 with Bertrand de Billy. The Daphne production of the label Decca under Semyon Bychkov was nominated at the Grammy Awards in 2006 for best Opera production. In 2009, as a production of the WDR at Profil Medien, a SACD des was created under the direction of Semyon Bychkov. In addition to Kwangchul Younn as King Heinrich, among others, were: Johan Botha, Adrianne Pieczonka, Petra Lang and Falk Struckmann. The performance of the Valkyrie by the Bayreuth Festival under the direction of Christian Thielemann with Johan Botha, Albert Dohmen, Edith Haller and Linda Watson was published at Opus Arte in 2011. For 2018, he was awarded a Ho-Am prize.

Since 2010, he holds a professorship at the College of Music of Seoul National University.
