About

Karin Freist-Wissing studied sacred music (‘A’ exam) and orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold.

She has overseen the choral and orchestral work of the Kreuzkirche in Bonn, the largest Protestant church in Germany’s Rhineland region, since 1990. Under her musical direction the church choir, the chamber choir Vox Bona and the symphony orchestra all developed into leading ensembles of the Cologne/Bonn region, as well as Germany-wide and internationally, which is evidenced by the many prizes won at musical competitions, invitations to festivals, CD and radio recordings and concert tours in Germany and other countries.

Karin Freist-Wissing regularly performs major oratorios of all eras, conducts symphonic orchestral concerts and makes a cappella music to a professional standard with the chamber choir Vox Bona.

Her particular focus is on unusual interdisciplinary musical projects in collaboration with art, theatre, dance, acting and politics, such as for example the performance of Bach’s St John Passion as modern dance theatre in 2011 and the world premiere of the jazz opera ‘Abraham’ by Daniel Schnyder as part of the Düsseldorf festival in Bonn and Düsseldorf in 2014. Performances of the opera then took place in Jerusalem and Bethlehem. In 2016 Karin Freist-Wissing put on political night-time concerts for the first time and in 2017 she staged an acted performance of St Matthew Passion by J. S. Bach, in collaboration with the director Gregor Horres.
