About

In esteeming the public and international critics, there are only two orchestras that could challenge each other for the top spot: the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berliner Philharmoniker.

It is in the nature of things that in such a situation, the difference between the two orchestras is always emphasized: supple elegance and nobility of the Viennese, gripping, passionate play of the Berlin, silky string sounds of one, soloistic brilliance of the winds of the other orchestra. Under such conditions, it does not seem exaggerated to celebrate the founding of the "Vienna Chamber Orchestra - Berlin" as a small sensation.

On closer examination, however, the two orchestras have a close relationship with Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado (both directors of the Staatsoper and chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker) and Sir Simon Rattle, as well as the many years of solidarity with many guest conductors who, along with the communal Central European music tradition, has been able to impart to both orchestras a culture of play which, combined with enormous flexibility and specific sound beauty, still distinguishes them distinctively from the highly virtuoso American top orchestras.

The fact that they are competitors in the music market, despite the longstanding good relations, should not be kept secret.
It took the initiative of Sir Simon Rattles, whose birthday wish, to conduct a joint concert of the Viennese and Berliners on the 50th, brought the two orchestras together. Making music together was so fruitful that there was a spontaneous desire to continue this experience. From this idea the "Chamber Orchestra Vienna - Berlin" was born.

They are effectively the essence of both orchestras, and the list of participating soloists and members almost reads like a "who's who" of their most notable musicians. Her musical ideal is to unite chamber music delicacy and symphonic grandeur in her repertoire. But the most essential element of this top ensemble lies in its philosophy of working in close collaboration to create a unique artistic exchange that is equally exhilarating to audiences and musicians alike.
