This group is primarily formed by the horn section of the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, who are bound by strong friendship and, thanks to their musical and virtuoso qualities, are able to offer performances at a high artistic level. Supported by a trio of musicians from the Jazz world, they propose a repertory of pieces by Lowell E.Show written for horn quartet, as well as pieces by Astor Piazzolla and some Jazz standards: a band sound, veined by irony and interwoven with swing, yields original sonorities and fascinating tone-colours, where the game of improvisation creates new and suggestive solutions.
During several years, the musicians of the I.J.H.E. have performed under the baton of some of the most famous contemporary conductors, such as Zubin Mehta (principal conductor of the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), Giuseppe Sinopoli, Semyon Bichkof, M.W.Chung, George Pretre, Wolfang Sawallisch, Riccardo Muti, Simon Rattle, Bernhard Haiting, Claudio Abbado, E.P.Solonen, Lorin Mazel, Seji Ozawa, Gunter Want; moreover, they were invited to collaborate with such important orchestras as: Orchestra della Scala (Milano), Orchestra Nazionale RAI, Orchestra di Santa Cecilia (Rome), Deutches Oper Berlin, Berliner Philarmoniker, Israel Philharmonic, M.D.R. Leipzig.
The group has given many performances in festivals organized by Italian institutions, and will have many engagement in the next season. In fact, in 2002 the Italian Jazz Horn Ensemble will perform concertos in several places in Italy, among which: Brass Festival at Quart (Val d'Aosta), Santa Fiora in Musica (Grosseto, Toscana), Ouverture Toscana (Siena), Minori Jazz on the Coast (Salemo), Ancona, Cremona, Estate Imprunetina (FI), Gargano Festival, Musica Europa (Roma). Dale Clevenger, first horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, has played together with the ensemble on some occasions during the 2001 tour, expressing his satisfaction and joy.
The group has live recorded a CD, produced by Digiridu.
