Croatia-born Dubravka Musovic is one of the leading dramatic mezzo-sopranos of our time, in German and Italian roles as well as the French and Czech repertoire. Her portrayals of Kundry, Ortrud, Amneris, Ježibaba, Dalila and Carmen have delighted audiences and critics alike. Some of her most striking triumphs include Amneris with the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz (2014 – Torsten Fischer, director), Ortrud with the Festival Ljubljana (2014), Kundry at the Kroatischen Nationaltheater Zagreb (2012/13), Ježibaba at the Volksoper Wien (2010 & 2012 – Renaud Doucet, director) and at the Oper Graz (2009/10 – Stefan Herheim, director) as well as Herodias at the Peking National Opera (2010) in the first performance ever of Salome in China.
Her last two seasons included Kostelnicka in Jenufa with the Janácek Brno International Festival, Amneris at the Janácek-Opera Brno, Iokaste in Strawinski’s Oedipus Rex at the Croatian National Theater „Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka, Herodias at Theater Wuppertal and Ortrud at the Croatian National Theater Zagreb.
In 2016 she returns to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz as Amneris for their revival of Torsten Fischer’s Aida production.
Dubravka Musovic made her debut as Carmen in 2000 at the State Opera Prague, a role she subsequently sang at the Janácek-Opera Brno. In 2001 she joined the Croatian National Theatre Zagreb as a member of their fixed ensemble, and has kept close ties with this house to the present day.
Her Zagreb debut was the title role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, which was followed by roles such as Roméo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi), Eboli (Don Carlo alongside Paata Burchuladze), Charlotte (Werther), Marina (Boris Godunow), Amneris (Aida), Santuzza (Cavalleria rusticana), Zita (Gianni Schicchi), Gertrud (Hänsel und Gretel), Madame Flora (The Medium), Mère Marie (Dialogue des Carmélites), to name but a few. In addition, she was simultaneously engaged from 2005 to 2009 at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken, where she sang the roles of Eboli, Leokadja Begbick (Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny), Fricka (Das Rheingold), Adalgisa (Norma), Judith (Herzog Blaubarts Burg), Carmen and Santuzza. In guest engagements she has sung Amneris with the Festival Ljubljana, the Janácek-Opera Brno (and on their tour in Japan), and at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Dalila with the Antikenfestspielen Trier and the St. Galler-Festspielen, and Mère Marie with the Miskolc Opera Festival in Hungary.
As a concert soloist, Dubravka Musovic has performed Berlioz’ Romeo et Juliette with the Croatian Radio- and Television-Orchestra (2015), Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky (2015) and Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder (2014) both with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Waldtaube in Schönberg’s Gurrelieder under the baton of Stefan Blunier with the Beethovenfest Bonn (2012) as well as Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Missa Solemnis, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, Das Lied von der Erde, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Berlioz’ Les nuits d’été, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem and many more. She sang with Jonas Kaufmann in the Anniversary Concert of the Richard-Wagner-Verband Saarland at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken and with José Cura in the Summer Evenings in Rijeka. Her interpretations of Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere mei and Charpentier’s Te Deum have been recorded by Croatia Records.
Dubravka Musovic was born in Dubrovnik and completed a degree in Architecture, after which she began her vocal training at the Music Academy in Zagreb, where she completed a Masters program in Opera and Singing. She continued her vocal development with Ruža Baldani, Eva Blahova and Carol Byers, and is the recipient of numerous prizes, most recently “The Best Wagnerian Voice of 2013″ from the Croatian Richard-Wagner-Verband for her portrayal of Ortrud.
