Born 1952 in Rieden, Füssen, grew up in Darmstadt. 1971 to 1973 studied literature at Heidelberg University; 1972 to 1973 assistant director at Heidelberger Theater. First productions in Bremen, Wiesbaden, Hamburg and Berlin (among others 1981 Lessings "Emilia Galotti" at the Freie Volksbühne Berlin), at the Zurich Drama Academy and at the Theater Neumarkt in Zurich.

1983 to 1985 Engagement at the theater Freiburg. Lorca's "Bernarda Albas Haus" was the first invitation to the Berlin theatre meeting in 1985. 1986 to 1989 Andrea Breth changes to the Schauspielhaus Bochum. Andrea Breth received numerous awards, including the Nestroy theatre prize 2003 in the category Best Director for "Emilia Galotti", 2011, "incidents", and in 2016 for John Hopkins "This story of yours". In addition, in 2006, she received the theater prize of the Prussian Seehandlung Berlin Foundation and in 2015 the Schiller prize of the city of Marbach and in 2018 The Pour le Mérite for science and art. Andrea Breth was a professor of directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst "Ernst Busch" in Berlin and is a member of the Akademie der Darstellenden Künste in Frankfurt am Main, the Akademie der Künste Berlin and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. She is also a recipient of the Austrian cross of Honour for science and art 1. Class and the Grand cross of merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
