About

In its outskirts lay, to the west, the rubble of what was once the Palace of Freiburg , seat of the Nassov government during the Dutch invasions . Its construction dates back to the mid- 19th century, when, in 1841, the then governor Francisco do Rego Barros , the future Count of Boa Vista , ordered the engineer Firmino Herculano de Morais Âncora to build the Provincial Palace that the Republic would transform into a State Palace.  In 1859 it underwent a renovation to house the Emperor Dom Pedro II, the Empress Dona Teresa Cristina de Bourbon-Duas Sicilies and their daughters, when it received the name Campo das Princesas, initially given to the garden, later expanding the appellation to the Palace.

In 1920 , the building was extensively renovated, when another floor was built, in order to cover the entire body of the building, giving it more amplitude. Such works were only completed in 1922 , during the interim government of Severino Pinheiro , due to the death of Governor José Rufino Bezerra Cavalcanti . Between 1926 and 1930 , during the government of Estácio Coimbra, the palace was remodeled, decorated and furnished. In 1967 , the palace even served as the seat of the government of the Republic, at the time of President Arthur da Costa e Silva and) Governor (Nilo de Sousa Coelho)
