Torre Matta Tickets & Tours
Torre Matta is the watchtower of the Aragonese Castle of Otranto, which remained buried for 500 years and now re-emerged in all its natural beauty. Following the Turkish invasion of 1480, the entire medieval wall of Otranto was destroyed. In 1481 the city was liberated and the reconstruction of the entire city walls began. During the first phase, cylindrical towers (washers) were built and subsequently, these structures became more and more similar to casemates or defensive works to protect the artillery, therefore the original washer was replaced by the strut. The Tower today, after some restoration interventions, has rooms suitable for hosting exhibitions, events, conferences and meetings, in synergy with the activities that take place in the nearby Aragonese Castle.
