Programme
Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV988
Robert Schumann: Arabeske in C major, Op.18
Overview

“The Goldberg Variations are not only a unique work in piano literature, but they are also the most creative and multidimensional. It's deep and emotional and goes straight to the heart. You can go deeper and deeper into this work and discover something new every time. The piece allows us to get everything out of ourselves, ”says Lang Lang.

Lang Lang has just published the Goldberg Variations on Deutsche Grammophon, fulfilling a lifelong dream. For more than 20 years he dealt with the work of Bach, which is considered to be one of the greatest challenges for pianists. As a 17-year-old he was already playing it in a way that left the pianist and conductor Christoph Eschenbach in amazement back then - at night, in an empty theater: “By heart, perfectly studied, with an enormous sense of style - what an experience!” Recalls Eschenbach.

Venue Info

Munich Residenz - Munich
Location   Residenzstraße 1

The Munich Residenz in central Munich is the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria. The Residenz is the largest city palace in Germany and is today open to visitors for its architecture, room decorations, and displays from the former royal collections.

The complex of buildings contains ten courtyards and displays 130 rooms. The three main parts are the Königsbau (near the Max-Joseph-Platz), the Alte Residenz (Old Residenz; towards the Residenzstraße) and the Festsaalbau (towards the Hofgarten). A wing of the Festsaalbau contains the Cuvilliés Theatre since the reconstruction of the Residenz after World War II. It also houses the Herkulessaal (Hercules Hall), the primary concert venue for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Byzantine Court Church of All Saints (Allerheiligen-Hofkirche) at the east side is facing the Marstall, the building for the former Court Riding School and the royal stables.

Numerous cultural events take place throughout the year in the rooms and courtyards of the Munich Residence. The varied offer ranges from concerts and exhibitions to open-air events and residence weeks.
