About

Born in Kroonstad, Free State, South Africa, Levy Sekgapane joined community and church choirs from an early age, the Fidentia South African Youth Choir under the baton of André van der Merwe among others, and received his first music training in singing and piano at the Stellenberg High School in Cape Town with Marianna Marais and Elizabeth Wright.

He graduated as a double major BMus student in classical piano and singing at the South African College of Music (University of Cape Town) and is currently doing his final year Postgraduate Diploma in Music Performance with Hanna van Niekerk and Professor Kamal Khan.

Levy Sekgapane has worked with directors such as Professor Angelo Gobbato, Matthew Wild and Christine Crouse, and took part in masterclasses and lectures by the South African tenor Kobie van Rensburg on early music/Baroque.

He has performed John Stainer’s Crucifixion and Mozart’s Requiem in the Cape Town City Hall with the Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town, the tenor solo in Bach’s Johannes-Passion as a member of the International Choral Academy Lübeck under the baton of Helmuth Rilling, appeared as a soloist in concert with Bryn Terfel, conducted by Kamal Khan, and during President Barack Obama’s visit to UCT, and sang a role in Anamchara – Songs of Friendship written for the Commonwealth games in Glasgow with the Scottish Opera.
His professional debut has come about November 2014 with the role of Don Ramiro in Kobie van Rensburg’s production of La Cenerentola, followed by 4th Knappe in Parsifal at Theater Chemnitz, Germany.

Recent and upcoming engagements include Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Seviglia at the Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach and Zweiter Priester in Die Zauberflöte as a member of Semperoper Dresden Young Artist Program among the others.

Levy Sekgapane is the winner of Mimi Coertse Singing Competition (1st Prize, 2013), Schock Foundation Singing Competition (1st Prize, 2013), ATKV-Muziqanto National Classical Vocal Competition (2nd Prize, 2014), 34 International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition (1st Prize, 2015), the SAMRO foundation scholarship prize (2015), and the XV Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition (1st Prize, 2015).

Sekgapane, a South African tenor who won first prize in the Montserrat Caballé Competition, is paying his second visit to the Liceu after making his debut here as Count Libenskof (Il viaggio a Reims) in the 2017/18 season. His repertory includes other Rossini lead roles such as Count Almaviva (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Don Ramiro (La Cenerentola), Count Libenskof (Il viaggio a Reims) and Lindoro (L’italiana in Algeri). Among the opera houses where he has performed are those of Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Copenhagen, Paris and Oslo
