British conductor Edward Gardner makes his Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season conducting Katya Kabanova.
Gardner was Music Director of Glyndebourne on Tour (2004–7) and Music Director of English National Opera (2007–15). He was Principal Guest Conductor of City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (2011–16) and is currently Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic. Gardner’s many conducting credits for English National Opera included Fidelio, Benvenuto Cellini, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Otello, The Queen of Spades, Der Rosenkavalier, Peter Grimes and the world premiere of Julian Anderson’s Thebans. Other opera credits have included Der Rosenkavalier, Carmen, Don Giovanni and Werther (Metropolitan Opera, New York), Eugene Onegin(Paris Opéra), Otello (Bergen National Opera), Death in Venice (La Scala, Milan), Der Rosenkavalier (Lyric Opera of Chicago) and Falstaff and Duke Bluebeard’s Castle in concert with the CBSO.
Gardner’s many concert appearances include engagements with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra (whom he has conducted at the First and Last Nights of the Proms), as well as Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. An exclusive Chandos recording artist, his award-winning discography includes music by Janácek, Elgar, Mendelssohn, Walton, Lutoslawski, Britten, Berio and Schoenberg. His awards include an RPS Award (2008), an Olivier Award (2009) and an OBE (2012).
